New Delhi, December 30, 2025: The All India Chakma Students’ Union (AICSU) has demanded the immediate removal of Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajai Singh, IPS, from the investigation into the murder of Tripura student Anjel Chakma, alleging bias, false public statements and a compromised probe.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the apex Chakma students’ body urged Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to intervene, stating that the conduct of the Dehradun police since the beginning of the case has raised serious concerns about the fairness and impartiality of the investigation.
AICSU alleged that SSP Ajai Singh made misleading statements to the media even before the investigation was completed, which, according to the organisation, appeared aimed at shaping public opinion in favour of the accused. The union took strong exception to claims reportedly made by the SSP that the incident arose from a “joke gone wrong” during a discussion inside a canteen and that there was no racial motive behind the attack.
Rejecting this narrative, AICSU said Anjel Chakma was brutally attacked and stabbed, and that attempts to downplay the incident as a mere fight undermine the gravity of the crime. The organisation further alleged that the SSP relied heavily on statements made by the arrested accused while in custody, while allegedly disregarding the versions of the victims, eyewitnesses and family members.
“It is common knowledge that accused persons often attempt to construct stories to project their innocence. Treating such statements as gospel truth while rejecting the accounts of victims and witnesses cannot be considered a fair or impartial investigation,” said AICSU President Drishyamnuni Chakma.
The students’ body also pointed out that the FIR in the case was registered after a delay of three days, calling the delay and subsequent developments “highly suspicious”. According to AICSU, the SSP has effectively reached conclusions and given a clean chit to the accused even before the probe is formally concluded, thereby vitiating the entire investigation process.
Expressing a lack of confidence in the Uttarakhand Police, AICSU said that despite assurances from the Chief Minister, the actions of the investigating authorities suggest an attempt to shield the accused for reasons best known to them.
In view of these circumstances, AICSU has demanded that the investigation be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at the earliest, warning that crucial evidence could otherwise be wiped out or manipulated.
The union reiterated its demand for justice for Anjel Chakma and called on the authorities to ensure an independent, transparent and unbiased investigation into the case.
