Kamalanagar: August 31, 2025:
Kamalanagar town is reeling under a severe crisis following an abrupt and steep hike in electricity bills that has left many households in shock. Families have reported receiving bills of ₹10,000, ₹20,000 and, in some cases, even as high as ₹30,000 for a single month.
Residents say such an unprecedented rise in charges is unbearable and reflects what they call the “anti-people” policies of the ZPM-led government in Mizoram.
Durjya Dhan Chakma, President of the BJP in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC), strongly condemned the increase, noting that it comes at a time when essential commodities have already become more expensive. “First, the price of ration was doubled from ₹15 to ₹30, and now electricity bills have multiplied more than tenfold. This is pushing ordinary people into untold hardship,” he said.
Mr Chakma also expressed disappointment at what he described as the silence of ZPM leaders and MDCs in CADC, accusing them of ignoring the suffering of the people.
Alongside the electricity issue, auto-rickshaw owners in Kamalanagar, many of them unemployed youths trying to earn a living, are also facing harassment. Several vehicles have reportedly been seized by Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs) and handed over to the SDO office in Chawngte. “During my last tenure, I procured over 200 auto permits to support unemployed youths. What is stopping ZPM leaders from taking up this issue today?” Mr Chakma asked.
He further criticised the government for focusing only on routine transfers of teachers rather than addressing pressing local problems. “Real governance means standing with the people, solving their daily struggles, and providing relief to the poor. The people are watching closely and will not remain silent against neglect and failure,” he said
