New Delhi:, 29th December, 2025: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has strongly condemned the killing of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, and the brutal attack on his brother Michael in Dehradun, describing the incident as a “horrific hate crime” that reflects a deeper crisis in society.
In a post on social media, Gandhi said hatred does not emerge overnight but is “fed daily,” particularly among the youth, through toxic content and irresponsible narratives. He alleged that such hatred is being normalised by the “hate-spewing leadership of the ruling BJP,” and warned that the consequences are now being seen on the streets.
“India is built on respect and unity, not fear and abuse. We are a country of love and diversity,” Gandhi wrote, urging citizens not to turn into a society that looks away while fellow Indians are targeted. He stressed the need for collective reflection on what the country is being allowed to become.
Expressing solidarity with the bereaved family, Gandhi said his thoughts are with the Chakma family and the people of Tripura and the North East. “We are proud to call you our fellow Indian brothers and sisters,” he added.
The case has sparked widespread outrage across the country, with many civil society groups and student organisations demanding swift justice and stronger action against racial abuse and hate crimes targeting people from the North East. The hashtag #JusticeForAnjelChakma has been trending on social media as calls grow louder for accountability and systemic measures to curb such violence.
