Lunglei, December 18, 2025:
Two inmates escaped from District Jail, Lunglei, on Wednesday afternoon, triggering a massive search operation by jail and district authorities.
According to Zonet JB, the escape took place at around 2:00 pm on Tuesday. The fugitives have been identified as Raju Chakma and Lakrahawia Chakma.
Raju Chakma, a resident of Chawngte was lodged in jail in connection with a POCSO case, while Lakrahawia Chakma from Tuichawng village was imprisoned for his alleged involvement in a scooty theft case. Sources said the two managed to flee by scaling the jail compound wall on the Tlak side using a rope-like arrangement.
The escape came to light when jail authorities noticed the absence of both inmates during the afternoon meal roll call. An immediate search operation was launched, and efforts are continuing intensively.
There are unconfirmed reports of sightings of the escapees in the Hauruang and Phairuang areas, prompting authorities to intensify search operations in and around these localities. Despite extensive searches conducted throughout the night, the two prisoners were yet to be traced till the filing of this report.
